Toyota Asks for Input on New RWD Compact

Toyota Enthusiast site Club4AG is inviting sport compact enthusiasts to provide input on the potential spiritual successor to the legendary budget drift car, the AE86 Corolla.

The webmaster is claiming to have a close ear to some key people within Toyota Motor Corp. that could have some influence on future product developments. Whether or not that's true, it's a good opportunity to make your voice heard on what you'd like to see from Toyota, and it seems the rear-drive AE86 is one particular model that has an especially strong following among compact performance enthusiasts.

The common themes that seem to be coming from enthusiasts are:

Lightweight
Rear-Wheel Drive
Four Cylinder

3. Toyota should recognize that there is a need for a truly affordable RWD car that is competent enough to build on. Scion kind of hits the mark for the Fast & Fugly crowd, but no Scion vehicle has been a true driver oriented car. I really love cars and driving, but I honestly cant think of any current Toyota product that I lust after.Toyota, build an affordable RWD clean looking car with the original spirit of the ae86. Keep the weight down and the entire drivetrain robust enough to make aftermarket modification appealing. Make it fast because Hyundai might have already beat you there.

4. 1. Front engine, rear wheel drive
2. Under $20,000
3. 4 cylinder, DOHC engine with at least 5 speed manual option
4. Four wheel independent suspension, 4 wheel discs
5. Under 2800 pounds

5. I predict Toyota building something less than the top performer yet shows promise and hope in light of the past glory of mr2's and early supras.

Then, for the second generation, they hold studies and focus groups, and completely misinterpret the data. They then add 600lbls, enlarge it enough to jump a full EPA classification, put in a bigger engine that barely makes up for the weight and kills gas mileage besides, completely soften it, and overall make it everything the first car was NOT meant to be.

Toyota, on second thought don't even bother.

6. I'll sugguest that it needs some sort of force induction to promote effiency for the sake of gas prices.

7. Most people forget the aspect of economical in the sence of affordable turbochargers and suspension setups should be an issue to contend with if you're going to mas produce a sprots car for the "average" SCC readers or "poor bastards" category. No navigation or leather seats or any thing that might take away from the car or spike the price beyond the limits of the usual or "average" SCC reader. Could be a sub-compact Yaris style or Corolla based model to save on developing costs and keep prices down for us. No ultra fancy TRD package that just charges for emblems RWD is a must, but ESC can be implemented in some cars to increase sales on road wary drivers.

Its should include this:
*1.8 to 2.0L engine
*RWD
*15 alloy with ultra high performance tires
*trim level with most likely a TRD sport spring and monotube shock assembly
* (if possible) a NACA duct on the air box
*and most important a large aftermaket support.

yep that sounds about right.
